Yakkoso
It is an annual plant that is fully parasitic only on the roots of a limited number of shii trees in a limited area.
The milky-white appearance with the scales and leaves open resembles the appearance of a yakko (a samurai's attendant) with unfolded sleeves, so it was named by Dr. Makino in 1911. It can be seen at the top of Mt. Myoken in Kaiyo-cho and Suzugamine.
Said to be the northernmost natural habitat in the world, it is designated as a national and prefectural natural monument.
