National natural monument “Fossil ripple marks”
There are only a few with such a large exposed area, and it is said to be one of the largest in Japan.
During the Tertiary Eocene geologic age (approximately 30-40 million years ago), this area was below sea level, and sediment was constantly carried in from the land to preserve the pattern. Subsequent tectonic movements have brought the area to its present state. It is said to be one of the largest in Japan, and there are only a few such large scale, exposed areas (30 m in height and 20 m in width).
